Teachers' Notes

This MoMA Guide for Looking was adapted from the teacher resources available through the Museum's Teacher Information Center. When you use the online MoMA Guide for Looking at Art and the Teacher Information Center slide sets, we encourage you to consider the following suggestions.

MoMA's Teaching Methodology
School Programs at The Museum of Modern Art collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to encourage students in grades K through 12 to develop skills for analyzing and enjoying art. Using an inquiry-based approach to learning, the objective of School Programs is to foster dialogue and facilitate students' abilities to find meaning in modern and contemporary art.

By asking students a series of open-ended questions and encouraging them to look carefully and think differently about works of art, students are able to support their interpretations with specific observations. This emphasis on analytic skills transfers into other areas of the curriculum from observation, analysis, and problem solving in science, to language classes where verbalizing visual information builds vocabulary.
