Andrew Wyeth and the
woman in this painting, Christina Olson, were neighbors in Maine.
He very much admired Christina, an intelligent woman unable to walk
due to a childhood illness. Wyeth said Christina "loved the feeling
of being out in the field."
- Does learning this
information about the painting change you ideas? Why or why not?
- Does the title
have any importance for you (what if Wyeth had titled the painting
Farm in Maine, Portrait of Christina, or just Christina)?

Think of someone you know and a place where you might find them
(where they live, where they work, or in their favorite place).
If you could make a painting of this person in this place, what
choices would you make? Where would you place them? What would they
be wearing? Would their face be visible? Why or why not? You might
not even include the person in the picture; instead you might include
their belongings and the place they live or work. See Henri Matisse's
The Red Studio for an example.
Allow yourself to consider
all of the possible choices you could make.
