Programs for Teachers and Administrators

Teacher Programs at The Museum of Modern Art are designed to introduce kindergarten–twelfth grade teachers to the Museum's collection and special exhibitions, to offer techniques for integrating the study of art into the classroom, and to help teachers from all subject areas to find connections with the collections. MoMA offers a broad range of options for teachers, from introductory workshops to intensive, weeklong institutes.

Teacher Workshops

Weekend Teacher Workshops
MoMA offers a wide variety of professional development opportunities for elementary- and secondary-school teachers. These programs introduce modern and contemporary works of art in the Museum's collection, explore interdisciplinary curriculum applications, and introduce methods for teaching with art objects.

Workshops for teachers take place on Saturdays during the school year. Workshops are generally held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The fee of $45 per teacher per workshop includes instruction and classroom materials.

Teaching with Objects
Saturday, October 20, 2007, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

This workshop introduces teachers to a variety of strategies for engaging students with objects in the museum’s galleries, from discussions and guided questions to drawing and writing activities. Teachers will also consider the importance of object selection and sequence when creating a lesson in the galleries.

Art and Politics
Saturday, November 10, 2007, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

This workshop will explore the ways in which twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists represented in MoMA’s collection have reflected on their times, societies, and politics. Participants will spend time in the galleries developing strategies for discussing art and politics in the classroom. They will then work independently and as a team to create their own artistic responses to today’s social and political realities and produce accompanying artist statements.

Integrating Foreign Film into the Classroom
Saturday, January 19, 2008, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Held in conjunction with the 2008 Global Film Initiative (GFI) high school screenings at MoMA, this workshop will focus on strategies to incorporate foreign films into the classroom. It is geared toward high school teachers, who will preview segments of the GFI films and will be invited to bring their classes to the free screenings in February. For more information about GFI, please visit www.globalfilm.org.

The Museum and the Sketchbook
Saturday, February 23, 2008, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Teachers will investigate ways to use sketchbooks with their students in museum galleries. This workshop will include discussion and sketching in the galleries as well as the opportunity for participants to share sketchbook activities they already use in the classroom and brainstorm new ones together. Art teachers, teachers in disciplines other than art, and teachers new to sketchbook use are all encouraged to attend.

Exploring Color in Contemporary Art
Saturday, March 22, 2008, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Inspired by the MoMA exhibition Color Chart (March 2–May 12, 2008), this workshop will explore the role of color in a selection of works by contemporary artists. Participants will engage with the philosophical and conceptual issues presented by art in the exhibition and consider how to incorporate these concepts into the classroom. In addition, participants will learn about strategies and models for teaching with contemporary art.

Design and Science
Saturday, April 19, 2008, 10:00 a.m.– 2:00 p.m.

Using the MoMA exhibition Design and the Elastic Mind (February 24–May 12, 2008), teachers will explore the connections between design and science. Working with a featured designer, teachers will learn about the latest trends in design that incorporate science and technology. Through gallery exercises and hands-on exploration, teachers will investigate design ideas that can be integrated into the classroom.
