Material consisting of pulped or pasted paper, resinous binders and other fibrous materials or plaster. It was invented in East Asia c. AD 200 and was in use throughout Europe by the 18th century. Its early use was predominantly for small household and ceremonial objects, and by the late 20th century it was not only employed for home crafts, theatrical props and toys but also for an increasing array of objects, including sculpture.
