The Museum began to pioneer the collection and exhibition of media art in the 1960s, and established the Department of Media in September 2006. MoMA's holdings of nearly two thousand media works date from approximately 1960 to the present. As diverse as media itself, the collection includes moving image installations, exhibitions, and presentations of time- and sound-based works that are made for and presented in a gallery setting, reflecting ever-evolving artistic practices, new technologies, and today's visual world.
