Henri Rousseau (French, 1844–1910)

Introduction

Source: Oxford University Press

French painter. He is commonly seen as the archetype of the untutored artist and can be considered the first major exponent of Naive art. His brightly coloured, dream-like paintings, many of them depicting exotic subjects, anticipated some of the major artistic movements of the 20th century, including Surrealism.
