Frownland. 2007. USA. Written and directed by Ronald Bronstein

For the second year running, MoMA’s Department of Film, in collaboration with Independent Feature Project (IFP) and its quarterly publication Filmmaker, will screen the five nominees for the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You award. The nominees were selected by senior members of the Filmmaker editorial staff and a MoMA film curator. The five nominees represent this year’s best American independent films on the festival circuit that have yet to be picked up for theatrical distribution. The award winner, selected by Filmmaker, will be announced on November 27 at the 17th annual Gotham Film Awards. Filmmakers will take part in a Q+A following many of the screenings. The November 19 screening of Frownland is also presented as part of Modern Mondays.

Organized by Joshua Siegel, Assistant Curator, Department of Film; Michelle Byrd, Executive Director, IFP; and Scott Macaulay, Editor, Filmmaker magazine.

Licensing of MoMA images and videos is handled by Art Resource (North America) and Scala Archives (all other geographic locations). All requests should be addressed directly to those agencies, which supply high-resolution digital image files provided to them directly by the Museum.

Requests for permission to reprint text from MoMA publications should be addressed to text_permissions@moma.org.
