Duch, le maître des forges de l'enfer (Duch, Master of the Forges of Hell). 2011. Cambodia/France. Directed by Rithy Panh. DCP. In Khmer and French; English subtitles. 110 min.
A former schoolteacher turned party secretary of the Khmer Rouge, Kaing Guek Eav (“Duch”) was the commandant of Tuol Sieng, the death camp known as S21, from June 1976 until its discovery by the Vietnamese in 1979. Pol Pot’s willing executioner, Duch was one of the few high-ranking officials to be sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity by a UN-backed tribunal. Rithy Panh, who experienced the murder of his own family as a young teenager, created this documentary record of Duch as he faced trial in 2009, capturing on camera the remorseless words and sentiments of a butcher who authorized the murders of 12,280 official victims and untold numbers of others. Duch died in 2020 at the age of 77. Courtesy First Run Features
