Winner of the Silver Bear in Berlin and presented at MoMA in its North American premiere, Rithy Panh’s latest film is a tour de force of stop-motion animation and fanciful, gimcrack diorama that reimagines George Orwell’s Animal Farm —along with Pierre Boulle’s The Planet of the Apes, Georges Franju’s Blood of the Beasts, and Gustav Doré’s grotesque engravings of Dante’s Inferno —as a post-apocalyptic world of bloodthirsty animals who feed on a steady diet of pornographic imagery and murderous ideology inherited from the very humans whom they have enslaved.
