El invierno de Pablo (Pablo's Winter). 2012. Spain. Directed by Chico Pereira. In Spanish; English Subtitles. 76 min.
Pablo worked for years in the mercury mines of Almadén, Spain, a perilous place that closed in 2002, sharply changing the shape and wealth of the town. Now in his seventies, Pablo is dour but lovable, dry but funny, and doesn’t want much but a Marlboro, a chat on the phone with his grandkids, and quiet. The rich, tranquil black-and-white cinematography allows the audience to observe Pablo undisturbed, seeing the march of time in his eyes and body. Director Chico Pereira stumbled on an unlikely start in casting Pablo, but his easy magnetism on screen brilliantly illuminates the story of one man and a generation of miners.
