Fi al-thawra (During Revolution). 2018. Syria/Sweden. Directed by Maya Khoury. US premiere. Courtesy the Abounaddara Collective. In Arabic; English subtitles
. 144 min.
Filmed over a period of seven years by Maya Khoury and the anonymous Syrian artists of the Abounaddara Collective, During Revolution was conceived, in the words of producer Charif Kiwan, as “a way to resist the traditional narrative that reduces the revolution to one single place, Syria; one single political project, democracy against Islamism, or democracy against dictatorship; or one single figure, the hero, the good guy.” Of the many filmed records of the Syrian Civil War, During Revolution is distinguished by its sense of chaos and uncertainty, as well as its candid depiction of a revolutionary movement bitterly splintering into competing factions.
