Why did so many women artists of the 1940s and 1950s refuse to be identified as women artists? What art-world and larger sociopolitical challenges were they up against, prior to the Feminist movement and artists like the Guerrilla Girls, who demanded equal inclusion in museums like MoMA? We’ll look at a wide range of artists in the exhibition Making Space: Women Artists and Postwar Abstraction, including Helen Frankenthaler, Lenore Tawney, Lee Bontecou, and more.
This session is led by Kerry Downey.
