The Caine Mutiny. 1954. USA. Directed by Edward Dmytryk. Screenplay by Stanley Roberts, Michael Blankfort, based on the novel by Herman Wouk. With Jose Ferrer, Van Johnson, Fred MacMurray. 124 min.
Life aboard the *Caine*—a minesweeper of little consequence in the US Navy fleet—is quiet and orderly, the sailors aren’t always as fastidious as they should be with their uniforms and Lieutenant Kiefer spends much of his time writing a novel. When Captain Queeg is brought on to replace the kindhearted Captain DeVriess, life on the Caine takes a quick turn. Queeg’s tyrannical rule leaves the crew concerned for their safety and in fear of his unbending, by-the-book brand of justice.
