Bogart finally won an Oscar for his role as Charlie Allnut, whose last name says a great deal about his character. After the death of her brother, Rose Sayer must flee German East Africa and finds the only safe conveyance left: a dilapidated river steamboat. The ship, African Queen, is run by the grumpy and usually drunk Charlie, who goes toe to toe with the imperious, teetotaling Rose throughout their perilous journey.
