With CLOUDS, New York–based duo James George and Jonathan Minard have crafted both a portrait of a creative community and a mold-breaking documentary. Their interviews with hackers, artists, and technologists—including MoMA architecture and design curator Paola Antonelli—reflect on the state and future of coding and design. Shot in a hybrid of CGI technology and DSLR photography, CLOUDS allows visualizations of algorithms to accompany the conversations describing them. At MoMA, George and Minard will guide the audience through selections from the 10 hours of footage in their theatrical presentation of the project, in one of many possible encounters with the material. The work has been presented in exhibitions and film festivals, and is distributed through the filmmakers for viewers to explore and interact with. CLOUDS offers an immersive view of the human talents shaping contemporary digital culture, and celebrates the sense of discovery made possible by technology, with each exchange of ideas begetting the next.
