1968. USA. Directed by George A. Romero. With Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea, Russell Steiner, Karl Hardman. Romero had been making 8mm shorts as a teenager in Pittsburgh, but this was his first feature. Working on no discernible budget, Romero accomplished (in the words of critic Robin Wood) “a feat of imagination and audacity carried through with exemplary courage and conviction.” Although cinematic zombies had been around for decades, Romero lent them a staggering panache that informs cable’s most popular show today. Attendees are reminded: NO BITING IN THE AUDIENCE. 96 min.
