IMAGINING THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART IN THE 21ST CENTURY IS THE SUBJECT OF FALL LECTURE SERIES AT MOMA

Imagining The Museum of Modern Art in the twenty-first century is the focus of four lectures and panel discussions in October, November, and December 1996, at the Museum. This second annual Studies in Modern Art lecture series provides an opportunity for a broad range of scholars, architects, artists, and MoMA curators and staff to examine the future of the Museum from philosophical, historical, and architectural points of view.

The Idea of a Modern Museum
A conversation between Henri Zerner, Professor of Fine Arts,
Harvard University, and Jorge Klor de Alva, Class of 1940
Professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies and Anthropology,
University of California at Berkeley. Introduced by
John Elderfield, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs
and Chief Curator at Large, The Museum of Modern Art.
December 3
The Museum and Society
A panel discussion with Fred Wilson, artist; Janet Abrams,
architecture and design critic, The New York Times;
and Robert A.M. Stern, architect. Moderated by Helen Searing,
Alice Pratt Brown Professor of Art History, Smith College.
December 12
Rethinking The Modern
Terence Riley, Chief Curator, Department of Architecture
and Design, The Museum of Modern Art. Followed by a
discussion with Glenn D. Lowry; Mary Lea Bandy, Chief
Curator, Department of Film and Video; John Elderfield;
and Kirk Varnedoe, Chief Curator, Department of Painting
and Sculpture, The Museum of Modern Art.
