Dear Friends:
This month, MoMA presents the unique work of the German photographers
Bernd
and Hilla Becher. Fascinated by functional architecture, the
artists systematically photograph water
towers, gas tanks, and other industrial structures, grouping the
images by type in grids to invite comparison. Far less familiar
than these "typologies" are the landscapes the Bechers
made at the same time to provide overviews of entire industrial
complexes. Opening May 21, the exhibition juxtaposes these equally
compelling but artistically different ways of
seeing.
On May 19, a special concert organized as part of the exhibition
Jazz
Score presents two world-renowned jazz improvisers—Polish
trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stanko and American saxophonist Billy
Harper—performing together for the first time, in a celebration
of Krzysztof Komeda's film music. Komeda, perhaps best known for
composing the haunting score to Rosemary's Baby, was a
key player in Eastern Europe's underground
jazz scene during the late 1950s.
We look forward to seeing you in the galleries.
