September 2008
Dear Friends:
On September 21, the Museum presents the first in-depth exploration
of Vincent van Gogh's extraordinary
night and twilight scenes, including such masterpieces as The
Starry Night, The Potato Eaters, and The Night Café.
Organized in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam,
the exhibition brings together some forty paintings, drawings, letters,
and letter sketches that give new insight into the artist's masterful
use of
color and light.
A number of new exhibitions this month continue MoMA's dedication
to examining recent developments in contemporary art. On the third
floor, New
Photography 2008 showcases the work of two highly
original artists: Mikhael Subotzky, whose powerful photographs document
the social issues facing his native South Africa after apartheid,
and German-born Josephine Meckseper, who is represented by two recent
series that consider the media's blurring of politics and consumerism.
On the second floor, Here
Is Every. Four Decades of Contemporary Art presents a selection
from MoMA's holdings that includes several new acquisitions on view
for the first time, and Scottish artist Lucy
McKenzie takes her turn with the Projects series, transforming
a gallery into a nineteenth-century salon-style setting for her
paintings and prints.
We look forward to seeing you in the galleries.
