July/August 2008
Dear Friends:
Summer has arrived at MoMA, and a number of exciting exhibitions
and programs in July and August provide an ideal way to escape the
heat. On July 20, Home
Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling opens in two
locations: on the sixth floor, an installation of models, drawings,
and other materials surveys nearly two hundred years of prefabricated
architecture, while five specially commissioned, full-scale homes
in the outdoor lot west of the Museum building allow visitors an
interactive experience with cutting-edge housing design. Opening
August 3, Kirchner
and the Berlin Street brings together seven paintings
and nearly eighty drawings for an in-depth exploration of Ernst
Ludwig Kirchner's Berlin Street Scenes—considered the artist's
finest works, these paintings brilliantly capture the restless energy
of the city just before World War I.
At P.S.1, the outdoor courtyard has come to life with the winning
installation from the ninth annual Young
Architects Program: P.F.1 (Public Farm One), created by New
York–based WORK Architecture Company. Composed entirely of
recyclable materials, P.F.1 features a working farm blooming with
colorful flowers and vegetables, as well as a refreshing pool and
other areas in which to stay cool. This living structure is very
much in keeping with MoMA's many "green" initiatives,
including the recent switch of all MoMA stationery, invitations,
brochures to environmentally friendly paper.
Opportunities to relax amid the lush plantings and cool fountains
of MoMA's Sculpture Garden abound in July and August—MoMA
Thursday Nights brings live music and cocktails to the garden,
while the celebrated Summergarden
series of free classical and jazz concerts resumes on Sunday evenings
beginning July 6.
We look forward to seeing you in the galleries.
