Art, architecture, and design exist in an ecological context. The Museum of Modern Art is committed to sharing the most thought-provoking modern and contemporary art while inviting audiences to explore the art, ideas, and issues of our time. We believe that our intellectual and cultural work is inseparable from the biological and climatic systems that govern the planet. As the realities of the climate crisis continue to transform societies and traditions in unforeseen ways, more than ever, new narratives and methods are needed to lay forth a path of hope, resilience, innovation, and empathy with the public we serve. MoMA’s commitment to celebrate creativity, openness, tolerance, and generosity includes our promise to lead the cultural sector in promoting a just and sustainable future.
As a thought leader, the Museum embraces the responsibility and opportunity to raise awareness on the ways our collective choices impact the environment. To tackle the climate crisis, we believe that a holistic approach to sustainability is essential. Our ambition to adopt a collaborative approach includes seeking out perspectives and knowledge from all communities, particularly those that have been historically marginalized.
With the recent establishment of the Museum’s Sustainability Department and the Emilio Ambasz Institute for the Joint Study of the Built and Natural Environment, MoMA is dedicated to building sustainable futures at the Museum and beyond. MoMA’s sustainability journey grew from a foundation of staff interests, which led to operational adjustments in 2008, and has continued to build momentum through the award of LEED Platinum certification for the Museum’s renovation and expansion in 2019. By 2025, will have reduced our building emissions by 20% and cut our waste in half.
MoMA is committed to leadership in sustainability as both an institution for public education and a community of passionate and dedicated individuals. The Museum is actively transforming its building systems and operations to limit energy consumption and emissions, striving towards achieving zero waste with the resources it consumes, breaking new ground with related exhibitions and programs, and engaging communities in conversation while taking action together to help safeguard our environment now and for generations to come.
